Event Summary

What are promising strategies for equity-minded teaching and the design of high-impact practices that will prepare students for higher levels of academic and social mobility? How do we measure progress towards equity goals through an inquiry-based lens that centers the “how” and the “why” behind student success data? This presentation will provide campus examples and practical guidance on how to move from talking about equity to building the capacity for becoming equity-minded educators and leaders to support the success of all students.

Event Summary

Join award-winning science communicator Mónica Feliú Mójer and national public radio host Maddie Sofia for a hands-on science communication workshop. This workshop will focus on tools and strategies to make science communication more inclusive. Participants will learn to communicate science in ways that center their audience’s interests, values, existing knowledge, context, and identities. They will also learn about reflexivity, a practice that allows individuals to recognize how their background, identities, and biases influence what they think or do in a situation and is a key trait of inclusive science communication. Participants will leave with concrete steps to make their science communication more inclusive and reflexive.

Networking and Successful Career Transition
On-demand Webinar

+

Summary:

Networking is one of the biggest areas where fellows and students communicate the need for additional training. However the concept of networking can be somewhat intangible and given the “internet of things” can seem to be a daunting and confusing task.

UC Santa Cruz provides membership and access to the Beyond the Professoriate series of training and webinars which help fill these training gaps and point in the direction of additional resources for further development. The platform features a number of different classes devoted to networking: the first class entitled “The Key to a Successful Career Transition.”

Workshop Outline:

This workshop is broken down into the following modules

  1. Evaluate Your Best Opportunities
  2. Introduction to the Research Stage
  3. How to Persuade People to Hire You
  4. Getting Started with LinkedIn
  5. How to Build Your LinkedIn Profile
  6. Using LinkedIn to Research Career Options
  7. Key to a Successful Career Transition
  8. How to Write Resumes
  9. Conclusion: Evaluate Your Opportunities

Chemical and Biological Entities Workshop

Monday February 27, 2023 | 4:00pm (PDT) | PSB 240

This workshop will be of interest to researchers working in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics, intellectual property protection, start-ups, etc.

Dr. Steve Boyer, currently on the Google patents team, will be presenting a workshop at our regular Departmental Seminar meeting on Monday, February 27th in PSB 240 at 4:00 pm on methods to search chemical and biological entities effectively on your laptop. This workshop will be co-lead by Dr. Jane Frommer. Dr. Boyer and Dr. Frommer work at the interface of chemistry/biology and computer science, in the field of converting molecular names and structures, patents, proteins, genes, cell lines and diseases into searchable digital content. They will be leading a workshop during our normal Monday seminar where you are invited to bring your laptop to explore:

  1. Machine-readable formats of chemical structures & important molecular identifiers (i.e. MolFIle, SMILES, RnxSmiles, InChIs, InChIKeys, OCIDs, CAS #’s)
  2. Overview of the various curation processes for extracting information from both text & images. This includes chemistry AND biology (proteins, genes, disease, etc).
  3. What to do with the data: where it lives, how to access it, & how to use it
  4. Example use-cases, including how big pharma and startups are using the curated data (i.e. discovering important associations, including what molecules are in litigation; using the data for machine learning application & AI opportunities)
  5. A brief Google Patents tutorial showing features launched this past week (i.e. how to leverage this open-source resource and couple it with other resources)
  6. New applications that exploit cheminformatics using some user-friendly tools (open source and commercial)

To participate, please bring your laptop with you, with the following installed

  1. Chrome browser
  2. DataWarrior: (download and install): https://openmolecules.org/datawarrior/download.html
  3. A molecular editor: e.g., Chemdraw, Marvin Sketch, ChemDoodle (download and install)
